they say that "October 12th should be observed with mourning and funeral marches". and that Columbus day has come along way from then to modern-day.and that it has a different meaning to Latin and other religions its different.

I think that we should have a little celebration, I mean it's when Columbas found the United States.

We've been celebrating Columbus Day since forever and no one will change their minds about it. I mean i don't agree with any idea surrounding Columbus Day because he was a terrible man who brought disease to happily living people and pretty much killed them all. But, go ahead and try to change it one bit and see how far you'll get.

Columbus day has been around for a long time and everything has been fine. so i see no reason for them to change it, or complain about it. u can either celebrate it or not. if some people don't want to celebrate it then don't it should still be a holiday because it is when the united stated was found.

I don't see any reason not to celebrate Colombus Day It's when we discovered the U.S. I don't get why people are suddenly so against it

It's not going to get changed unless people start complaining. Until i read this article i never heard anybody who actually complained about celebrating columbus day.I also don't see it as a catholic holiday. I'm catholic and i'm pretty sure columbus day has never come up at church. I've never really thought much of columbus other than a day off from school every year, but now that i think of it, we don't celebrate any other day on which a country/continent was found so why celebrate this one?

They shoulnt change Columbus day unless something goes wrong. we have been celebrating it for a while and it has been fine so i dont know why they would want to change it. Mitchell Powers

Columbus didn't really find America just the West Indies (which is geographically close to America). He was the Harvester of Sorrow. He did bring disease and capture and eventually other people followed his trail to enslave and kill the natives that settled that land many years before the Europeans set foot there.

First off he didn't find the United States.

I don't really feel any different about the day than i did before true it caused lots of suffering true it caused all of our modern day nations but if he didn't do somebody else would have eventually.

I think we should continue celebrating Columbus Day because even if he didn't " discover the Americas" he was the first to bring back the word about the new world.

i agree that we should have a little celebration because columbus did find America!

I think we have a right to have a celebration but we haven't had one to know if it would be worth it or not, after all it is when Columbus found the US.

Okay, we have been celebrating Columbus Day for how long? It is a holiday in the United States and no one should change that; you can celebrate it or not but it should still be a holiday no matter what. Just like CHRISTmas, people can celebrate it or not, it should be the same for ANY OTHER holiday in the United States.

Columbus Day should be celebrated Because of the tradition and because this marks the day that America was discovered. Even if someone was here first.

Columbus did not discover "The New World". My people, the Native Americans were here first. They believeb back then that no one owned land or discovered it, land was a spirit, Mother Earth.

Alright let me make this breif: CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IS A SCUMBAG WHO ENSLAVED, KILLED AND BROUGHT HORRIBLE DISEASES THAT NEARLY WIPED OUT AN ENTIRE PEOPLE!!! HE DID NOT EVEN OFFICIALLY DISCOVER AMERICA!! AMERIGO VAPUCCI DID! OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE CALLED COLOMBUSA!!! HE STARTED SO MUCH STUFF WITH THE NATIVES AND KILLED OFF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE FOR WHAT???? NOTHING!!!!

THEREFORE I HOPE YOU SEE WHY COLUMBUS IS A SCUMBAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Columbus Day is insignificant because he didn't "find" America. Although he did bring back word of this new land, as someone said, another person would have found it if he didn't.

This article is saying there are differnet meanings of Columbus day depending on your culture. I also think that this day should be celebrated because it is a significiant day to our contry no matter how you look at it and we've been celebrating it for a long time.

I don't think that we need to take away Columbus Day as a holiday. Some people celebrate it, some people don't. But it is a day to remember when Christopher Columbus found our country. However, even though he did bring over disease and slavery, he was the first founder, and I think that's important to acknowledge.

well this is a topic that almost makes me laugh, its another case of european "triumph" quite honestly it was some unknown clovis person that "discovered" the Americas. But when the Europeans came to America they see this civilization of odd looking people that they assume to be savages and claim that they (the europeans) found and claim it for their own.
And before columbus there was Leif erikson*
So yes lets celebrate the begining of the suffering of one of the most nature-harmounious civilizations. I think this article is correct in that if it is to be celebrated at all, it should be celebrated as the begining of a melting pot that is now america, not as some igorant European that took over the "New world"

i think that if we were to go and change the holiday we have been celibrating for 75 years this year then i think that we should have a better reason to change columbus didnt find the united states he wasnt the first one here and if people who are calling him the first american then they are representing a really bad guy so i dont think the holiday should be celebrated in his name i think it should be called something like usa day or something i dont know but either way something needs to be done about it and not this second but soon like before next october 12th

People can argue that columbus is a 'villian' or 'hero', but i think that we should still keep it around because we've been celebrating it for a while now and i dont think that it should be changed because he did do a lot of good thinks despite the bad ones..if you don't wanna celebrate it then dont, just enjoy the day you have off.

I dont think the holiday should be called Columbus Day it should have a different day beacuase Columbus did so many bad things to the Native Americans and other poeple. The good things that he did dont really matter.

With what we talked about today i dont think Columbous was very much a hero. He didnt discover America because when there is evidence hat the natives where already there.
i dont mind at all that we have the day off of school!!!
but i dont think the day should be called Coloubus Day.

I think Columbas is a villian because he unintentially brought disease and high tech warfare items(guns and cannons.) But i do think we should celebrate Columbus Day because without him, what we see today would be all different.
